How Death Notification Entries Affect ACH Operations
What Is a Death Notification Entry?
A Death Notification Entry is an ACH transaction that notifies a financial institution of a Social Security recipient’s death. A common misconception is that a DNE automatically authorizes the return of government benefit payments or immediately changes account handling.
It does not.
Instead, a DNE notifies the institution to review the account, follow established procedures, and determine appropriate actions under relevant regulations and rules. Recognizing this distinction is essential.
Why DNEs Matter
The death of an account holder raises several operational questions. Should future government benefit payments be returned? What happens if funds have already been withdrawn? How do joint account owners affect the situation? When does a reclamation apply?
The answers depend on several factors, including account ownership, payment timing, and federal requirements. Applying the same approach to every situation can increase risk.
