Is risk bad or good? It depends. Risk is a natural part of the credit union business.
Get it right and you profit and build capital. Get
it wrong and “ouch!”, it hurts. The board’s job is never easy and seems to be
getting more complicated every year. The financial services market continues to
change and risks proliferate. This presentation will cover the fundamentals of asset/liability
management, credit risk, and interest rate risk through clear explanations and
board-focused insights. Gain the knowledge to interpret financial results, ask
the right questions, and align strategy with service. Discover how informed
risk management supports sustainable earnings and fulfills the People
Helping People mission.

WEBINAR DETAILS
This course will explore some complex financial
risks that are a fundamental part of the business we’re in and examine them as
opportunities for growth and profitability. We will discuss the basics of asset/liability
management and prepare directors to ask key questions of management. This
primer will help you look at some of the issues and terms of ALM in a new way.
We will look at diverse points of view on credit risk,
the risk of making a loan, and the various ways credit unions approach this
necessary risk. Loans are generally the most profitable product we sell, and
often the most needed in our communities. But the level of risk you choose to
take in lending, the members you will grant loans to, the types of loans you
will make, and the pricing on those loans all affect how much you earn on your
loan portfolio.
Finally, we will look at interest rate risk to
understand how mortgages, auto loans, and investments affect credit unions in
the short- and long-term. Each credit union determines the diversity in their
portfolio. The types and terms of “assets” in your portfolio have an impact on interest
rate risk.
